An LED lighting upgrade can help warehouses, loading docks or any other industrial spaces.

Lighting in an industrial space, whether it be a warehouse, manufacturing plant, distribution centre, logistics depot etc. is extremely important. In all of the above examples there needs to be adequate light that gives employees a well lit and safe environment in which to carry out their work. In the case of manufacturing, the quality of the light also comes into play especially when manufacturing involves fine detail work.

Generally speaking, industrial areas are lit by large 400 Watt metal halide or mercury vapour lights. These are instantly recognisable from the dome reflectors that encase the light bulb. The cost of running these lights is immense not to mention the unwanted addition of heat as these type of lights run very hot.

OptiTech have specific premium lighting that we use for industrial spaces that ensure that the brightness levels are up to scratch, visibility is improved and electricity costs are greatly reduced.

How can LED Lighting help industrial spaces?

  • LED lighting creates a well lit and safe environment for employees.
  • Greatly reduces warehouse electricity costs.
  • Minimal impact to day-to-day operations during installation.
  • LED dramatically reduces heat omissions compared to mercury vapour lighting.

Things to look out for when upgrading to LED Lighting

When looking at upgrading lighting in an industrial space there are a few considerations that you need to take into account.

Is there anything that would prevent the installation from taking place?

Whether there may be the inability to shit down certain parts of your industrial space in order to keep manufacturing going, or a floor that has too much machinery on it which will prevent access, these are issues that must be noted.

We have the experience and know-how to work with you in order to achieve your desired outcome.

We work closely with The Green Guys Group, and have many years experience working with hundreds of large industrial companies that each have unique situations. We have the experience and know-how to work with your company to achieve the desired outcome.

Some solutions that work are splitting the installation up into multiple site visits where we work around the schedule of the business in order to prevent any unnecessary interruptions, or performing the work before and after hours again to minimise disruptions.

    Brightness Levels

The other main consideration is brightness levels.

Upgrading to LED lighting will result in an increase to LUX levels, which is ideal. All of our installations adhere to AS1680:2008 which stipulates  the required LUX levels for different space types and their uses.

Older mercury vapour and metal halide lights have very short lifespans when compared to LED lights and they have a substantial brightness degradation over time. Some of these older lights can lose 40% of their original brightness after only 4 years. Our LED lights only lose 10% of their original brightness over 50,000 hours!

    Colour Rating Index (CRI)

The CRI is a measure of how close the light source is, in quality, to actual daylight. The higher the CRI, the higher quality of the light.

CRI is not a measure of brightness or colour but how well colours appear in that light.

Studies have shown that something as simple as LED lights with a high CRI in produce refrigerators result in higher sales, because the fruit looks riper, plumper and juicier to the eye, as opposed to that in refrigerators with normal fluorescents.

    ROI - Payback

One of the benefits of LED lighting is the fact that the longer your operational hours are, the faster the lights pay themselves back.

With the average payback period for an LED lighting project in a supermarket averaging less than 12 months it’s no surprise that the uptake of LED lighting over other energy efficiency products has been so rapid.

    Saving on Maintenance Costs

Maintenance of lighting is another associated cost, which increases relative to the size of the space. This may come in several forms, but a universal one is the replacement of old, blown lights. OptiTech’s LED lights have a lifespan of up to 90,000 hours which translates to over 10 years (if running them 50-80 hours per week). Compared to traditional fluorescent tube lights which are rated at an average of 10,000 – 15,000 hours, this increased lifespan means significantly less maintenance.

    Installation

Together with The Green Guys Group, we have installed lights at thousands of businesses across australia. We know that maintaining as little disruption to regular business operations is on of the major concerns to your business or organisation.
