    Things to look out for when upgrading to LED Lighting

    There are a few factors that combine to create greater lighting results for retail stores. Here’s some extra information behind retail success.

    Brightness Levels

    The other main consideration is brightness levels.

    Upgrading to LED lighting will result in an increase to LUX levels, which is ideal. All of our installations adhere to AS1680:2008 which stipulates  the required LUX levels for different space types and their uses.

    Older mercury vapour and metal halide lights have very short lifespans when compared to LED lights and they have a substantial brightness degradation over time. Some of these older lights can lose 40% of their original brightness after only 4 years. Our LED lights only lose 10% of their original brightness over 50,000 hours!

    Colour Rating Index (CRI)

    The CRI is a measure of how close the light source is, in quality, to actual daylight. The higher the CRI, the higher quality of the light.

    CRI is not a measure of brightness or colour but how well colours appear in that light.

    Studies have shown that something as simple as LED lights with a high CRI in produce refrigerators result in higher sales, because the fruit looks riper, plumper and juicier to the eye, as opposed to that in refrigerators with normal fluorescents.

    One of the benefits of LED lighting is the fact that the longer your operational hours are, the faster the lights pay themselves back.

    With the average payback period for an LED lighting project in a supermarket averaging less than 12 months it’s no surprise that the uptake of LED lighting over other energy efficiency products has been so rapid.

    Maintenance of lighting is another associated cost, which increases relative to the size of the space. This may come in several forms, but a universal one is the replacement of old, blown lights. OptiTech’s LED lights have a lifespan of up to 90,000 hours which translates to over 10 years (if running them 50-80 hours per week). Compared to traditional fluorescent tube lights which are rated at an average of 10,000 – 15,000 hours, this increased lifespan means significantly less maintenance.
